Richard, A Brief Synopsis
Created by Margaret 15 years ago
Richard was born on 7th July 1943, a second son for Evelyn & Harry Brown. His parents were members of Marston Road Congregational Church, Oxford (as it was then). He attended the Sunday School under the leadership of Harry Dandridge, Reg Vallis and the care of the dearly loved Mr Mortimer - later he helped in the Junior Section and Pilot Section.
During Richard's teens there was a solid group of young people who met once a week as a club to play games, and to organise a church service once a month, very much encouraged by the then student pastor, Brian Wren. The youth club even redecorated the church hall!!. With several others, Richard became a junior choir member.
Outside church he joined Worcester Boy's Club and the Air Cadets. He began to play football and excelled later on as a goalkeeper. He loved his motorbikes and in time graduated to a mini and then a special sports car. He watched Headington United as often as he could and loved motor racing at Silverstone.
In 1972 he married Margaret and they moved to Eynsham where their son Alan was born in 1982. Richard spent most of his working life at the Gas Board where he made many friends - many who are still part of Margaret's life. He was a keen supporter of Oxford United and an avid watcher of Grand Prix, both on the TV and live! When he took early retirement from the Gas Board he worked with friends and on his own until being offered a job at Oxford Magnet Technology (which he really enjoyed).
Soon after he began working at OMT he started to have problems with his health. It took doctors more than a year to diagnose Motor Neurone Dissease but he took that diagnosis very stoically, determined to do all he could while he could.
We shall remember his determination not to be beaten and above all his pride in Alan and all his achievements. He is still very, very much missed.
